To date he has sold over 250 million albums worldwide making him one of the biggest selling artists of the last two decades. Rahman began his career composing ad jingles for brands like Leo Coffee, Allwyn Trendy watches and Asian Paints in the 80s. He made his debut in Mani Ratnam’s National Award-winning Tamil film, Roja (Rose), in 1992, which was subsequently dubbed into many languages. The pan-Indian success of the music of Roja was followed by a string of equally-successful Tamil soundtracks, like Gentleman, Kaadhalan and Duet, all of which established Rahman’s ability to churn out chart-topping numbers that melded Carnatic classical influences and Tamil folk music with sonic flourishes and world beats.
