Instrumental evolvement|At the age of 13 he started African/Brazilian percussion lessons, because his stepfather (divorced from Marijn’s mother now) played djembé. After five years he picked up his stepfather’s guitar as well and teached himself to play all kinds of songs. When he moved to Nijmegen to start a study information science one more year later, the acoustic guitar became the main instrument he played, because his father stopped paying for djembé lessons. Meanwhile all this, Marijn practiced every now and then on a drum kit individually, but began drumming seriously at the end of 2008, when his band needed a drummer. Bands|With the African/Brazilian percussion group Afrodite, Marijn performed at parties and other events in Delft, Pijnacker and some other places.|In 5th to 6th grade, when he was 16-18, he played in the alternative/blues band Scissor Salad as percussionist.
