If you hear the name Markus Gardeweg, the first thing you think of is a “pioneer” in music, an outrider and avantgardist. Markus Gardeweg is an innovator in the of dance and house music scenes. He is a symbol of “the finest club sounds” and has played his part in elevating house music to a new level. But the name Markus Gardeweg also stands for “Kontor Records”, the Hamburg based dance label and the most successful of its kind in Germany today. But lets start at the beginning: At the age of 12, Markus began collecting vinyls and organised his first disco evenings. Spinning dance, funk and soul vinyls to some 400 people who were close to going crazy – this was the birth of Markus’s passion. Before long, he was getting bookings for high school graduation parties and sport events. When he started spinning in Hamburgs clubs such as Palladium, Bit on Jungfernstieg, Third World Club and Traxx he had already mastered the same skills as much older colleagues. An important tool in his development was his cell phone, which Markus kept with him at all times. One night, Kontor Records and club chief Jens Thele gave him a call.
