In summer 2005, Toru with High School friends Alex and Ryota started the band in Japan. It started after each of them got their musical instruments. After that TAKA (森内貴寛) joined and they focused on performing lives in the Tokyo area. In 2006 they independently released 2 mini albums. Because their albums sales, their participation at festivals that summer and their energetic lives in the outskirts of Tokyo, were noticed by a foreign record company. At their first One-Man Live done at LOFT in Shinjuku 500 people attended. In March 2007 Tomoya officially joined the group and the 5 person group made their major debut by releasing their first single 内秘心書(Naihi Shinsho) on April 25th. The group came up with the name ONE OK ROCK because they would book studio time at One o’clock. The Japanese pronunciation of ONE OK ROCK is uwanokurokku which sounds like One o’clock . On April 5th, 2009, Alex was arrested for groping a female prep school student. They were going to release the single 「Ａｒｏｕｎｄ ザ ｗｏｒｌｄ 少年」on May 6th but was cancelled.
