Rock might not be dead in other parts of the world, but check the concert listings in Bucharest and you’ll see little new being done with instruments. The indie rock trend and the new -wave revival passed through Romania quicker than an early winter flu epidemic. The good news is that some caught the bug and the symptoms made them tear into their guitars in a way that would make any British band proud. Chief among these outfits are The Amsterdams, a five piece that has been playing for a couple of years now. The Amsterdams do a little of everything - like lazy melodies (‘Where to go’) to indie pop (‘Fireworks’) to sounding like your favourite indie rockers. The band’s lyrics cover the whole range from disaster to nostalgia. ‘Taking care of Anna’, is a story-in-a-song about the bombing of a cafe; something you’d never guess from its bouncy riffs. If indie rock ever makes it in Romania, it’ll be because of The Amsterdams and their relentless pursuit (stay tuned for their debut album which will be out in the summer).
