After 2 years on YouTube, Corey ‘Mr. Safety’ Williams states that this is just the beginning.
The Artist behind the ‘Hey Little Sparta’ track, (The Mean Kitty Song)
So, who is Mr. Safety?|Cory Williams, (born August 5, 1981 - Merced, California) is a viral film maker, TV show host, music artist, actor, professional stunt man, and new media consultant, better known as Mr. Safety from SMP Films. He is a well known YouTube partner (paid by YouTube) and host of “The FIZZ”, a nationwide television show on DirecTV channel 101.
Cory was raised in Hilmar, California where he graduated high school in 1999. He majored in drama and vocal in which he earned university scholarships. After graduating, he began studying television production and music writing. He purchase his first camera and immediately began making all different types of videos with his friends. Sketch comedy, hardcore backyard wrestling, and horror films were his usual productions.
He named his project SMP Films (Simple Minded People) after the mind set that him and his friends had on life. Cory wasn’t the most popular kid in school because he was into acting and singing. In Hilmar, acting and singing was considered taboo and many people prejudged him because of it. Despite the name calling and opinions others had of him, Williams kept following his dream of becoming a film maker.
Despite his online success, Williams had no job or income; he dubbed his status “self-unemployed.” Supporting him was his girlfriend (now fiancee) Stephanie Roby.
Then GoldenPalace.com, an online gambling site, discovered Williams — on eBay. “I was so desperate. It was all over if I didn’t get any money within the next month,” Williams said. So he put himself up for auction as a human advertisement.|GoldenPalace.com paid him to wear a company T-shirt and promote the site by traveling around to do stunts on the street. The promotional gig ended last year when the federal government ruled that online gambling was illegal in the U.S.
The “Mean Kitty” video, Williams said, “is the most popular I’ve ever done.” with more than 3.6 million views (nov 2007)
His original intent with the video, Williams said, was not to “promote my cat,” but to give friends a view of his new Thousand Oaks apartment.
“That’s why my house is so much in the video,” he said. “I thought, How am I going to show my house without sounding like a big egotistical jerk?’”
Sparta, like his owner, was nearly homeless at one point.
The cat, now about 6 months old, first belonged to a girl in Los Banos who went door to door in her neighborhood trying to give the cat away because her mom wouldn’t let her keep him. Williams’ friend Steve took the cat, but grew weary of his penchant for biting and passed him along to Williams.
After Williams posted the “Mean Kitty” video two months ago, word spread quickly. “It was mostly word of mouth — MySpace, Facebook, friends. A lot of different Web sites put it on their front page,” Williams said. Plus, CBS’ “The Early Show” aired the clip.
He’s since made additional videos that reveal more details about Sparta for need-to-know-everything fans. In three clips — ”Witch Doctor,” ”Scare Tactic” and ”Big Problem” — Williams attempts to end Sparta’s biting and other bothersome kitty habits.
Despite Williams’ failed efforts to defuse Sparta’s energy, the “mean” kitty brings out the softie in his owner. “He’s my little buddy, like my kid,” Williams said. In one YouTube clip, he tells Sparta fondly, “You’re mean, but you’re mine.” - source
