“Being that my Pop’s is from The Bronx and my Mom’s from Queensbridge, I am Hip-Hop!”
A product of ghetto children, Ryan Perfect, born Ryan Burvick, was raised in a single parent home in the corner of Astoria, Queens (NY). Coming up, the multi- cultured (African American, Puerto Rican and Japanese) mc’s first love for music began at home where he was exposed to a wide array of music including Pop, Soul, Rock, Reggae and Salsa. Before the sub conscious love for sound and calling to be a recording artist became unavoidable, Ryan’s early talents were recognized as a young athlete playing basketball and running for Harlem’s Harbor track club. |It was here at the Harbor community center, where the future mc, inspired by his acclaimed family members, award winning actor Laurence Fishburne (cousin) and respected jazz producer Jacques Burvick (uncle), began to explore other forms of entertainment by dancing/performing on stage as an off Broadway actor. However, it was through his own hardships that Ryan was finally swayed to pursue his gift of turning life into music.
A rebel since birth, Ryan’s short fuse and defiance of authority spawned runaways from home, weekly therapy sessions and occasional “visits” In cuffs to local precincts, all before his teenage years. In these trying times Ryan also witnessed his mother’s hometown, the infamous Queensbridge housing projects; turn some of his family and friends into dealers and fiends. Not only did most of his peers share the same experiences, many of them used a common platform to express the frustration that surrounded them. That platform was Rap music. Heavily influenced by the ghetto stars in the area such as Nas & Mobb Deep, Ryan began hustling mixtapes on the streets and writing raps with a cousin in his aunt’s bedroom. He would later discover that he was birthing his craft in the very same apartment where Rakim and the groundbreaking Juice Crew recorded their classics.
Ryan’s first break came at the ripe age of 17 when legendary Hip-Hop producer Marley Marl gave the young MC the opportunity to record a promo for his highly respected, “Future Flavors” radio show. Soon after, Ryan teamed up with New York City’s own Hot 97 radio personality, DJ Enuff, to release his debut mix-tape “Driving Hearses”. It was off this opus coupled with various performances at the famed MC breeding ground “Lyricist Lounge”; that a buzz began amongst the streets, Internet, and industry. However, a near fatal blow impeded Ryan’s progress for some time.
During the summer of 2006, Ryan unexpectedly suffered a collapsed lung. Being bed stricken brought the 22year old street poet face to face with the possibility of not being able to record again. After a week’s regimen of oxygen support to inflate his lung , Ryan went back into the studio undeterred, this time writing, producing, and engineering for not only himself, but also for other signed and unsigned artists.
What makes Ryan Perfect’s approach to music unique; is the fact that it is everything you love and hate about hip-hop done effortlessly with a rare skill. By channeling the rhythm, energy and lyrics of urban themes and placing them over globally infectious production, it’s more than safe to say that Ryan Perfect’s music is real in every sense. Not real in sense of its traditional meaning but as he puts it, “Respecting Every Aspect of Life”. It’s in this universally real music that Ryan Perfect tells you what he sees, lives, feels, and imagines. Having been exposed to both the streets and academia, obtaining money as a hustler and in the form of a steady paycheck, Ryan can extract excerpts from his life and masterfully weave them into profound anecdotes. The extra life under his belt not only makes Ryan Perfect a “one-stop-shop” for hip-hop but also prepares him to be the future of music.
Ryan Perfect is on a mission. With an online release of his debut mix-tape “Driving Hearses”, and a slew of mix-tapes hosted by hip-hop legends such as Marley Marl and Tony Touch set to launch under his newly formed company Audio Pictures; the industry needs to fortify its infrastructure because Ryan Perfect is a definite problem. As DJ Enuff so rightly put it, “He is the future!!”
