Admiral Bailey (b. Glendon Bailey) was born in the Kingston 12 ghetto of Waterhouse. He started deejaying for U Roy’s Sturgav Sound System but was persuaded by Josey Wales in 1986 to join King Jammy’s. His earlier hits included tracks such as »One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer« (with Chacka Demus), »Ballot Box« (with Josey Wales) and »Politician«. It was however one year later with the song »Punany« that put the Admiral among the reggae superstars. The song was banned because of its slack lyrics but, a re-recording called »Healthy Body« soon followed from the Admiral. The song was fundamental in the bashment style dancehall that came to rule dancehall for x amount of years to follow and gave it’s name to the extremely popular Punany rhythm. |
