Altimet’s journey as a musician began in 1995, when he bought Naughtius Maximus’ self titled debut album. Thinking he could rap as good as if not better than his idols he began writing and studying any hip hop songs he could get his hands on. Prior to that, he was an avid listener of hip hop music but Naughty Max was the tipping point. In 1999, Altimet and some other like minded individuals formed the Teh Tarik Crew (TTC) and subsequently formed their own record label Teh Tarik Reords. The crew released their debut EP, ‘Are We Rap Stars now?’ the same year and began doing shows on the underground gig circuit and selling their EP by hand. The EP went on to sell 1000 copies. The crew went on to record their first full length album ‘How’s The Level?’ which received several nominations in the AIM (Anugerah Industri Muzik), Malaysia’s most prestigious music awards. In 2004, TTC followed up with their sophomore effort ‘What’s Next?’, also nominated in several categories in AIM 2005. On both albums Altimet acted as Executive producer/ A&R. Teh Tarik records also released a compilation mixtape ‘Mixology’ in 2004, showcasing TTC member’s solo songs and contributions from other local artists, as a way of providing local urban musicians a platform to put their music out. Aside from TTC, Altimet also works as a solo artist, producer, songwriter and composer and has work with loal artists from a variety of genres such as hip hop (Poetic Ammo, Too Phat, Soulid), Ska (Gerhana Ska Cinta), Drum N Basss (Spacebar), R&B (Ruffedge, V.E., Reshmonu) and pop (Kaer). He has contributed his songwriting and composing skills to 2 critically and commercially acclaimed albums, Ahli Fiqir’s ‘Hari Ini Dalam Sejarah’ and Too Phat’s multi platinum ‘Plan B’. Altimet also was the co founder of Mixology Dj Academy, an institution dedicated to spreading the knowledge of the mixing and turntablism to the masses, helmed by fellow TTC member DJ Fuzz. He also works as A&R manager for Powder Records, the independent record label that signed Ahli Fiqir. His production work on Ahli Fiqir’s debut album earned him an award at the recent Anugerah Planet Muzik (APM), Singapore’s equivalent to the AIM. Altimet also runs his own publishing company, Purplenotez Publishing, and does DJ gigs as well on a regular basis. Currently, Altimet is working on his solo effort titled ‘First Among Equals’ and performing as a solo act. The album promises a diverse selection of songs with musical influences ranging from trip hop to reggae to rock all incorporated into Altimet’s signature hip hop sound. The first single from his album to be released is titled ‘Clap, Move’ featuring Ruffedge, reached number on one Xfresh FM’s Top 30, Hitz.fm’s Met 10 and Fly FM’s Campur Chart. It has recently been nominated for Best Local English Artist/Song in this year’s Anugerah ERA, the awards show by Malaysia’s number one radio station, ERA FM. His second double single ‘She/ Sayang, Sayang’ achieved heavy rotation on all major radio stations including ERA, RTM stations, Hot FM, Hits.fm, XFresh, Fly and Suria FM. With video rotation on Hitz.tv and MTV Asia. The buzz of this single, had landed him the opening performance slot at this year’s Anugerah Planet Muzik, Malay music’s premier regional awards show, which was broadcast live to Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia. He is also co-A&Ring Powder Records next release, ‘One Asia’, an all Asian hip hop compilation. The current radio single, ‘Chantek’, features Adeep Fabulous Cats, is a reworking of Kahitna’s ‘Cantik’, and is beginning to gain regular rotation on all major local radio stations, and Altimet currently hosts ‘Holla’, an urban music/lifestyle program on Hitz.tv, Channel 705 on Astro. Whatever role he plays in a performance, be it as a hip hop act, club DJ or host/emcee, Altimet promises a fun, musically diverse, interactive show and a rocking good time for all who attend. |
