Scottish folksinger Mary Sandeman dressed as a Japanese Geisha to have a UK number one hit in 1981 using the pseudonym ‘Aneka’, which was chosen from a name in a telephone directory. After this taste of stardom, Mary packed up her kimono and wig and headed back to a quieter life in the north of Scotland. She had a modest revival when Japanese Boy was featured in the videogame Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on Flash FM. Under her own name, Mary Sandeman has achieved some success as a traditional Scottish folk singer/instrumentalist. She rocks! |
