Bruce Dickinson (born Paul Bruce Dickinson, August 7, 1958 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England) is an airline pilot, fencer, author and radio DJ best known for his solo career and as the lead singer of heavy metal band Iron Maiden.
Prior to reaching widespread international fame with Iron Maiden, he was a member of Styx (1976) (not to be confused with the American band of the same name), then went on to sing for Speed (1977 - 1978) (not to be confused with the female Japanese pop group of the same name). When Speed split up, he joined Shots, leaving in the summer of 1979 to join Samson. In 1981 he was approached by bandleader Steve Harris and manager Rod Smallwood and asked to audition for Iron Maiden. In the audition, he sang the songs Remember Tomorrow and Twilight Zone. His performance immediately gave him the job.
He made his recording debut with Iron Maiden on their Number of the Beast album in 1982. And played on all subsequent albums until Fear Of The Dark. Dickinson quit Iron Maiden in 1993 in order to pursue his solo career, but rejoined the band in 1999 along with fellow Iron Maiden alumnus and guitarist in his solo band, Adrian Smith. Both are still in the band to date.
Currently, Bruce flies for Astraeus airlines as a captain and recently helped holiday makers stuck abroad.
In 2005 he decided to record one more solo album. Though Adrian Smith was no longer in the band, guitars were recorded by Roy Z. The album released was called ’A Tyranny of Souls’ and was in the spirit of the Accident Of Birth album released in 1997.
