Chris Martin (Coldplay) and Michael Stipe (R.E.M.) teamed up to record a cover of this song with producer James Iha (former guitarist for The Smashing Pumpkins) for a Hurricane Katrina relief benefit EP, dedicated to social involvement and social activism. “In the Sun” reminds of those affected by the hardships of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. “Things are not fine. The storm is still impacting people’s lives in very real ways and many have been left desperate. I want to remind each of us that as humans, and certainly as Americans, it is our responsibility to help those in need… I had to do something as a public figure. The one thing I can do is sing, and it’s probably the best way to get people to pay attention”, acknowledged Stipe.
The original “In the Sun” is the second single from Joseph Arthur’s second studio album Come to Where I’m From. The single was released in the UK and Europe on April 23, 2001 via Real World Records and Virgin Records. |
