João Maia, former-guitarist of the missing band My Porno Star, looked for surrounding himself by known musicians so he could proceed his musical journey. Thus, starting with so many influences as Pixies, Iggy Pop, Sonic Youth or Joy Division, City Zen early would find a rock sonority of its own, with a marked and well defined identity. From the first demo tapes to the concerts, it was also a fast step. Stages as Tendinha dos Clérigos (Porto), O Meu Mercedes é Maior que o Teu (Port), the Fnac Stores (Porto, V.N. de Gaia and Matosinhos), the Azenha D. Zameiro (Vila do Conde) and Canastru’ s Bar (Castelo de Paiva) would come to provide visibility to the band, what also brought it prominence in the best-known portuguese music periodical named Blitz. City Zen were well launched when was forced to a long stop due to personal problems in the life of certain band members, what would culminate in an expected break up.
