In the year of 2002, from the yet warm ashes of some Oporto bands, City Zen would be born. João Maia, former-guitarist of the missing band My Porno Star, looked for surrounding himself by known musicians so he could proceed his musical journey. Thus, starting with so many influences as Pixies, Iggy Pop, Sonic Youth or Joy Division, City Zen early would find a rock sonority of its own, with a marked and well defined identity. From the first demo tapes to the concerts, it was also a fast step. Stages as Tendinha dos Clérigos (Porto), O Meu Mercedes é Maior que o Teu (Port), the Fnac Stores (Porto, V.N. de Gaia and Matosinhos), the Azenha D. Zameiro (Vila do Conde) and Canastru’ s Bar (Castelo de Paiva) would come to provide visibility to the band, what also brought it prominence in the best-known portuguese music periodical named Blitz. City Zen were well launched when was forced to a long stop due to personal problems in the life of certain band members, what would culminate in an expected break up. João Maia, however, did not seem to be in the mood of giving up and he was, once more, capable of giving life to City Zen, since the beginning of 2007 with a new formation. After a successful stay at the playlist of the radio station Aveiro FM, the band would reintroduce itself live at the Burns you the Rock Festival. Since then, City Zen went on a mini-tour across the north of Portugal and Galicia (Spain), playing live at Fábrica de Som (Porto), Plano B (Porto), Maus Hábitos (Porto), Contagiarte (Porto), Tertúlia Castelense (Maia) and even at La Iguana Club (Vigo, Spain). The band has also performed live at the tv show “Aquário” (Porto Canal) and is currently pre-producing the first EP, to be released soon.| |
