Culture Connect are a crew of musical nomads originally hailing from Darwin but now calling Melbourne home. Over the last eight years they’ve played events as diverse as the Darwin, Adelaide, and St. Kilda festivals, Centenary of Federation celebrations at Parliament House, appeared on Channel V and ABC TV, and played alongside tzu, The Herd, Maya Jupiter, Koolism, Elf Tranzporter, Illzilla, and Mista Savona amongst others. Radio wise, the Culture crew has done live shows for Triple Js Breakfast Show, Live at the Wireless, ABC Darwin, had their track Check 1,2 added to high rotation, recorded for SBS as part of their Whatever program and appeared on 2ser, 4zzz, PBS, and SBS Alchemy radio. Featuring 4 MC’s, Gamarang, Voodoo Dred, Mista Monk and Kojo with core muso’s Airi I on drums, and Bassman on synth and bass guitar the band create original Roots Hip-Hop music with a unique Tropical flavour. Culture Connect’s members represent a diverse range of nationalities, with cultural heritages extending to the nations of Zimbabwe, the Philippines, Haiti, Papua New Guinea, Ghana and Australia (both Indigenous and non-Indigenous). The diversity of these musical traditions, combined with the band members’ individual cultural experiences, are explored and reflected in their music. Drawing on musical genres such as reggae, funk, drum’n’bass, and roots the band create their own distinct brand of beats along with dynamic rhyme flows and topics spanning the breadth of life experience from identity, relationships to the social conscious and beyond. Culture Connect have released their debut EP Natural Intelligence independently and the crew’s debut album is in the works. Hold tight… |
