A vocal line can be repeated consistently through a song, but it’s meaning can change drastically with only a minor inflection. A song can seem both whimsical and monumental, often within the same passage. An album can travel between overt classical pop to obtuse ambience without sacrificing any personality or coherence. These juxtapositions never feel forced or insincere because these seemingly opposite extremes come from the same place. Their first EP frankencottage saw Dark Mean succeed in exploring their disparate harmonious objectives to critical and personal reward. This winter their second wondrous offering music box will scatter into public view, expanding on these established themes. Songs from both records will collectively help form their first LP The Constant K Determines the Ultimate Fate of the Universe later in the year. The title acts as homage to playwright Rebecca Nada-Rajah’s production, which was the original inspiration for the formation of Dark Mean. Since composing the soundtrack to Rebecca’s play the members of Dark Mean have frequently found themselves living in different continents, communicating through the wonders of technology and converging periodically at their home base at Vibewrangler Recording Studio in Hamilton. This slight wrinkle in their obstacle course does not deter them or cause worry, as they know once they are brought back together it’s all going to seem so easy.
