”Dinar Bandosu”, psychedelic/future-rock band from Istanbul-Turkey is made up of the members: Yilma Karatuna (drums & percussion, backing vocals), Ali Ece (electric guitars) Asaf Zeki Yuksel (ney, clarinet, theremine, various weird instruments made by himself, backing vocals), Ali Asaf Sarica (vocals), and Feryin Kaya (bass). Sounds like Erkin Koray, Velvet Underground, Baba Zula, Zen, Syd Barrett, Kemal Sunal and 70’s Turkish movie soundtracks. The early Dinar Bandosu published a Syd Barrett cover on the “Vegetable Man” series. They are making a kind of ‘psychedelic groovy Ottoman folkrock’. Have two legal releases: ”Saykodelikdesik” (2007) and ”Aya da Gidelim Osman” (2010) from Utopya Muzik (www.bagimsizmuzik.com).
|The name “Dinar Bandosu” is originated from one of the most influential underground turkish poets called Ece Ayhan. “Dinar Bandosu” is an innovation of him, it’s an imaginary band in which the Turkish intellectuals and artists play various western and Turkish musical instruments. However, this band always stayed as an imaginary project because these intellectuals and artists never played any musical instruments in their life. Neither Ece Ayhan did not play any music in his entire life but his obsession with the atonal music made him create this band in his mind. ‘Dinar’ is a town in city of Afyon (Opium) near the western Turkey. Afyon is a city where there are very large fields of opium but USA had forbidden the production in the 60’s. They choosed that name because they wanted to concrete the project of Ece Ayhan.
Dinar Bandosu started to play music by covering psychedelic anthems and after they began to write their own songs in early 2003. They had an offer from Have You Got it Yet? Syd Barrett global cover project and they recorded an interesting version called Interstellar Vegetable Man. The song had good feedback and critics and they started recording their own songs. In the year 2005 the band was reformed and after some member changes, reached the current situation. Sound of Dinar Bandosu has been progressed through a less garage and more experimental, danceable, neo-Ottoman way of psychedelica influenced by Stooges, 70’s Baris Manco & Kurtalan Ekspress, 13th Floor Elevators, Kemal Sunal movie soundtracks, Syd Barrett’s “Punk” Floyd, old Mogollar, early Funkadelic, Mavi Isiklar, Spacemen 3, and Turkish “art” music. Their music is free-minded as not being dependant on the administrative borders of geography, whereas revolutionary and black-funny!
Dinar Bandosu released their first legal album ”Saykodelikdesik” in June 2007. The album was recorded in MIAM (Music Research Center of Istanbul Technical University) by Aziz Berk Erten and Mehmet Ates (producer). It was released from Utopya Muzik (Utopia Music) by Ayhan Orhuntas. The album was echoed very welcoming by the audience and the media. DB was participated in the prestigious summer festivals and underground gigs until the second album records which corresponds the beginning of 2009. The second album ”Aya da Gidelim Osman” was recorded by Serhat Ersoz (of the band “Mogollar”) in his music recording studio S.E.S Music. Mixing and mastering was handled by Serhat Ersoz, Oguzcan Sehiralti and Dinar Bandosu. The album was ready in the end of May 2009, but because of the situation of Turkish music industry and its horrible so-called producers, it took months to be released. At last, our producer Ayhan Orhuntas succored the future of “Aya da Gidelim Osman” and released from Utopia Music on 01.02.2010.
“Aya da Gidelim Osman” means “Let’s go to the moon Osman”. Osman is the name of the dog of the band member Asaf Zeki Yuksel which symbolise the enslaved and insulted human-kind of today. The album concept is escaping from the world and its unsightlinesses on the 40th anniversary of moon-set foot. The album consists of anti-racism, sexism and relationships, social awareness, and unity of the societies by the unique psychedelic and groovy touches of the band. Moreover, Eugene Hutzovina and Oren Kaplan of Gogol Bordello have participated in recording two songs of the album which are “Sulukule Hatirasi” (In memory of Sulukule -Sulukule is a gypsy music district in Istanbul, which the residents are deported) and “Gogol Bordello İstanbul’da” (Gogol Bordello in Istanbul). The album is on sale via internet by ”www.bagimsizmuzik.com”.
The first gig of the album will take place in Lyon, France on 18 February 2010 in the concept of Turkish Year of France and the show “Let’s Build The Bridge”.
Dinar Bandosu will keep continuing its musical journey psychedelically and the “unseens” will become visible, because they have landed on the moon and ground can be easily observed from the underground!!
Are there any moon passengers?
