DJ Gomi is originally from Tokyo, Japan. He was a student of famed record producer Quincy Jones at Berklee College of Music, Gomis dance version of Mariah Careys “Heartbreaker”, of which she cut vocals to, appears on the 12-inch record of the hit song. He has produced and/or remixed for artists including Madonna, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Cher and Cindy Lauper. He has also engineered for house legends Hex Hector, George Morel, and most notably, Junior Vasquez.
The electronics company Pioneer worked with DJ Gomi to develop a CD turntable CDJ, which a DJ can use to make scratching, tempo changes, and other effects using multiple or several CDs. Now CDJ has become a worldwide standard.
DJ Gomi is widely known for his days as the man behind the legendary DJ. As Junior Vasquezs Main Programmer, Gomi added his technical skill to some of Juniors finest productions including “Straight Up” by Chante Moore and “Everything” by Misia.
DJ Gomis relationship with Junior Vasquez began when Gomi, a die-hard fan of the renowned deejay, would make weekly pilgrimages from his college in Boston to New York City to hear Junior spin at Sound Factory. “I was in complete awe of Juniors skills behind the turntable. He managed to turn partying into a religious experience. People worshipped him, myself included. He changed my life.” Before Junior, Gomis music was influenced by the European Garage Sound. It was Junior who turned Gomis attention to Dance Music.
After graduating college, Gomi landed a job at a record label and moved to New York City. Already a fixture in the New York partying scene, Gomi began soliciting Junior with his original songs, hoping to woo the DJ into collaborating with him on new material. His persistence paid off. Junior began incorporating Gomis songs into his set at Sound Factory. He eventually approached Gomi for a collaboration. Their first work together, “Body To Body” by Shades of Love, climbed to …1 on the Billboard dance chart. Other hits followed including “Come Together” and “Lift Me Up.” Gomi later released two Billboard topping productions on his own: “Din Da Da” by Kevin Aviance and “When You Talk About Love” by Patti LaBelle.
Today, Gomi is focusing on solo production. His first original album, “Neo Maestro: Love & Star Soundtracks” was released internationally in June 2002 and continues to chart in the Top 20 albums sold at HMV stores overseas. His second album, “Neo Maestro II: Tribal Nation” featuring some of today’s favorite screaming diva’s and an eclectic mix of dance music incorporating hip hop, rock, rap and a dose of DJ scratch stylings was released overseas as a limited edition. Both albums along with Gomis new song “Deeper”, featuring Amanda Lepore, will soon be released in the U.S.|In addition, Gomi wrote and produced “Amanda, I Am”, Amandas Lepores second single and “Up In The House” with Amanda Lepore and Kevin Aviance. Both songs will be on Amandas upcoming album, also being produced by Gomi. His song “Power”, featuring Kevin Aviance, is included on Kevin Aviances newest album, “Entity”, which was released late September 2003.
Like Junior Vasquez, his predecessor and mentor, Gomi is actively working on furthering his club DJ-ing profile as well. He has already made a name for himself abroad, playing successful gigs at Velfarre in Tokyo. Gomi now has his sights on the United States and it…s popular circuit events. He currently holds residencies for John Blair at XL and Avalon in New York City and has just completed his third album, “Neo Maestro: EV (Evolution), NYC Beats,” to be released overseas in March 2004 with a US release date to follow shortly after.|DJ Gomi has a long music career, but since working with Nightlife Productions, he has come up with Seasons Of Love (Remix) from the Rent Soundtrack, as well as worked with and produced new artists.
