Formed in May 2012 by Rob Thompson and former member Bruce Tobin, Downside began writing a demo in a local music venue where Tobin also lived and worked as a sound technician. The bands early sound was influenced heavily by iconic Hardcore bands such as Madball and Terror, with lyrics written about dealing with depression and the social issues within their local music scene.
The original lineup also included Scott Johnson and Dustin Santos, who moved to New Zealand from the Philippines where he played in various Hardcore and Metalcore bands. The band began receiving attention after performing their first few shows, which included opening slots for international acts such as Australia’s Iron Mind and America’s Touche Amore.
In December 2012 the band released their first single ‘No Love’ which was closely followed by the self-released EP titled ‘Hold Me Down.’ Both releases were recorded, mixed and mastered at the bands local Media Arts School by Tobin and Audio Technology Tutor Jason Long. The EP was well received by audiences and ‘No Love’ received airplay on local Radio Stations. During the time of ‘No Love’s release Santos left the band due to personal issues, and was replaced by Michael Clapham.
The start of 2013 saw the band split from Tobin due to built up tension between members and recruit former Seas of Conflict drummer Josh Hamer. Shortly afterward, songwriting began and the bands sound began to take on influence from a larger range of heavy music, including Crust Punk, Dbeat & Metalcore. This new and lineup also saw the band open for more international acts such as Expire and Deez Nuts.
On April 1st 2013 it was announced that the bands long time friend Jordan Karl would be joining the band, helping add more to their growing sound. They will be going into the studio in the later half of the year to record their next self-released EP known by the working title as ‘Demons Path.’
A collaboration between Downside and Hamilton rapper Francis Lindell is currently being produced by Winston Anthony.
