The Boss (often referred to as DGNA), is a South Korean boy band with five members, formed under Open World Entertainment in 2010. In South Korea they are known as Dae Guk Nam Ah, literally meaning ‘The Boys of Super Space’, which is also the translation of their Japanese name Daikoku Danji in Japanese (大国男児) and how their English name of ‘The Boss’ was formed. This name is mainly used outside of Korea.
The band consist of five members: Mika, Karam, Hyunmin, Injun and Jay. Lee Suhoon, better known by his current stage name, Mika (미카), was born on June 28, 1990 (aged 20), making him the oldest member of The Boss. Mika is the leader and the main vocalist. Park Hyunchul, better known by his current stage name, Karam (가람), was born exactly one year after fellow member Mika, on June 28, 1991 (aged 19) in Daegu. He was inspired to become a dancer by TVXQ!/동방신기’s U-Know Yunho (유노윤호) and he continues to idolise him. Because of Karam’s looks, the other member’s joke with him and refer to him as ‘God’s Face’ after it being in the fanchant to ‘Admiring Boy’. Woo Hyunmin, is usually known as just Hyunmin (현민), was born on July 22, 1991 (aged 19). Hyunmin stands at 181 cm, making him the tallest member of the group. Lee Injun, commonly known as Injun (인준), was born on March 9, 1992 (aged 19). He enjoys beatboxing and pretending to be an MC in a lot of The Boss’s videos, by carrying around a blue plastic microphone. Jeon Jihwan, better known by his current stage name, Jay, is the ‘maknae’ of the band, born on March 31, 1994 (aged 17) in Seoul, and is the main dancer and rapper of the group.
All five members of The Boss were formerly members of Xing Entertainment and members of the generation band Xing with different stage names. This means that all of the members, despite joining Xing at different times, are all talented and experienced in the Korean music industry.
After being officially announced on January 28, 2010, The Boss debuted on March 4, 2010 with their song ‘Admiring Boy’ on Mnet Coundown. The Boss’ fancafe exceeded 40,000 members in only a few months of their existence, overshining other popular fancafes such as that of fellow Korean band Brown Eyed Girls. On June 18, 2010, they performed a comeback on KBS2’s Music Bank with 비틀비틀 (Biteul Biteul), also known as ‘Stumble Stumble’, after releasing the respective music video. They also went onto promote another hit, 아무도… 그 누구도 (Nobody… Anybody) in August 2010, but without a music video release this time.
After almost immediate overseas success in countries such as Thailand and China, The Boss are currently scheduled to spend some time in Japan to promote there, with aid of Japanese music company, Digital Adventure and Sony Music.
