Estates is tagged as: indie rock Creating something new can be terrifying. It requires willingness - eagerness, even - to relentlessly analyze and critique, stretch and bend, destroy and rebuild. Nothing can be considered off limits. It is with this brutal and often frightening approach to songwriting that Estates crafted their debut EP, Be Fair. After months of writing songs apart, the members of the band - drummer Andrew Lee, singer and guitar player Franc Castillejos, keyboardist Thomas Moore, bassist Jake Segars, and guitarist Tim Hoyt - convened in an Atlanta rehearsal space for a solid month. Regular twelve hour days and an unquenchable desire to create something special resulted in a large pool of songs, from which six were painstakingly chosen. “There’s an obvious pop sensibility to everything we write,” says Hoyt, who cites influences as varied as Paul Simon and Sigur Rós, “but we relish in taking a pop song and twisting it all up.” Produced by Aaron Marsh (Copeland, The Myriad), the music on Be Fair ranges from dark, almost angry riffs, to glorious anthemic choruses, replete with complex time signatures and chord changes.
