After months of writing songs apart, the members of the band - drummer Andrew Lee, singer and guitar player Franc Castillejos, keyboardist Thomas Moore, bassist Jake Segars, and guitarist Tim Hoyt - convened in an Atlanta rehearsal space for a solid month. Regular twelve hour days and an unquenchable desire to create something special resulted in a large pool of songs, from which six were painstakingly chosen. “There’s an obvious pop sensibility to everything we write,” says Hoyt, who cites influences as varied as Paul Simon and Sigur Rós, “but we relish in taking a pop song and twisting it all up.” Produced by Aaron Marsh (Copeland, The Myriad), the music on Be Fair ranges from dark, almost angry riffs, to glorious anthemic choruses, replete with complex time signatures and chord changes. Comparisons to Radiohead are appropriate. Comparisons to Foo Fighters are appropriate. Comparisons to My Morning Jacket are even appropriate, as each song on the EP varies noticeably from the next. Castillejos notes, “We don’t care to fit in a specific genre. If a song is good, we’ll play it. That’s the only requirement.” Before their debut recording was even complete the band began booking shows to coincide with its release. Having spent ample time touring the country in previous bands, the members of Estates are well-versed in delivering a performance that seamlessly blends the complexities of their music with the energy and excitement of a live rock band. With a highly promising debut, a memorable live show, and a schedule filling quickly, it becomes apparent that this is a band intent on being heard and leaving an impression. It’s safe to say that for Estates, nothing is off limits. (Description taken from the band’s myspace site: http://www.myspace.com/estatesmusic) |
