Fockewulf 190 are an italian band which can be tagged as italo-disco, electro, synth-pop, formed in Milan in 1980. The band is named after a well-known aircraft model of the II World War.
The original members were Victor Life on keyboards/synths, Dario Dell’Aere on vocals (who later hiked solo the italo-disco charts with the single Eagles in the Night.
The band belonged to the italian underground new-wave / synth-punk stream that was taking place in those years. The influences of the beginnings were in particular John Foxx’s Metamatic, Human League’s Reproduction, and Gary Numan’s Replicas. The first live performance of the band took place in 1981at the Taxi Club in Milan, an underground venture that was following the tendences of London’s “Blitz” and of the New Romantic trend.
In 1982 guitarist Stan After joined the band, and the band, disguised as “Iced Eyes”, self-produced and published the first single, “No Sex”, a synth-punk song which had moderate success in the local underground scene.
The international succes came little later, when, after signing a contract with Chappell Music label, Fockewulf 190 published two electrodance singles: Body Heat and Gitano, that sold around 150.000 copies overall Europe, in particular in Germany, and became italo-disco classics.
Fockewulf 190 are also the authors of another italo-disco hit, Tumidanda, by Frank Tavaglione, another italo-disco shooting star and former friend of the band.
The following tour, in summer 1984, took on stage the first Fockewulf 190 album, that, indeed, never saw the light , as the band split.|The band reformed in 1988, publishing a cover of The Height of the Fighting that did not raise in the public the same attention of the previous works.
Fockewulf 190 seemed to have ended their career, until, after more than 10 years of inactivity and a new member to replace Stan After, Markus Moonlite, in 2009 published (VadeRetro label) the new single “Oh Oh Oh”. The B-side of the single offers a new version of the hit “Gitano”.
