Jay and Lindsay had a morning spot on Australia’s Triple J radio station (Jay and The Doctor). Long standing favourites of the sydney music scene, have been good to their fans by playing many all ages shows. Their first EP ‘Dick Sandwich’ was produced in bassy grunge style and included a cover of the theme to ‘home and away’, a crappy Australian soap; as well as a song about Roger Climpson a TV news presenter. Their seminal album Coughing up a Storm followed. Sadly this CD is now out of print in its original version which included an abusive and threatening voicemail as its secret track. Moving on the band has replaced all its original members except Jason in semi-controvertial circumstances. Ben the original guitarist was first to go, he supposedly left to become an animal rights activist. Nat the drummer was next, to focus on his other band Quadbox. Lex was an awesome bass player and is sadly missed. Jay spent some time as the bass player for Nancy Vandal under the name Jason Jasonn Beers. The current band is just as funny, famously playing the intro to AC/DC’s thunderstruck over the top of an announcement been made by Today-FM ‘s breakfast show host Jackie-O at the Bass in the grass festival, ending with said person leaving the stage in tears (see here for part transcript of what was said.) The following day Jackie-O mentioned the ordeal on her breakfast show she co-hosts along side Kyle Sandilands. Kyle decided to get Jay of Frenzal Rhomb on the phone, looking for an apology. Jay defended the bands actions giving the reason that Jackie-O had turned up to the gig 9 hours later then expected. The interview ended with Kyle and Jackie-O threatening that Frenzal would never be played on their radio network (Austero) ever again, to which Jay replied with incredulity that Austereo would actually have to first change their playlist to include Frenzal Rhomb, before they could STOP playing the band. click here for the audio of this great moment (9:30 mins) This story ends with Jay winning the argument so convincingly that Triple J offered him and his band-mate Lindsay (aka the doctor) a job doing their breakfast show taking over from Adam Spencer and Will Anderson. Now that they’re on JJJ, their shows sell out even faster than before. Its actually easier to walk down the street and meet them than try to get a ticket. |
