Michael Franks is a singer and songwriter from the United States. Born in La Jolla, California in 1944,but raised in Washington Heights, New York; he began singing folk-rock, accompanying himself on guitar, in High School. He studied music in college, earned an M.A. from UCLA in Comparative Literature and a PhD from the University of Oregon, and taught undergraduate music courses. He continues to teach at UCLA.|In his lengthy career he has worked with a vast range of musicians and singers and to date has over 20 albums to his credit over a period from 1973 - 2006. Most of his albums boast a wide range of the who’s who of artists from David Sanborn to the Breckers, Larry Carlton, Joe Sample, Patti Austin and Brenda Russell.|Having lived on both sides of the coast -NY & LA - his music has more than a smattering of both jazz influences giving him a style all to his own.
