R E V I E W (Turntable Lab)|Man oh man oh man. 10 years later and this still sounds so ridiculously fresh. I can’t believe I was 12 when Mr Hood came out, but this record is like The Simpsons. Some shit will go over your head, but you start to realize how insanely creative it is when you watch the reruns as you get older. There is not one bad cut on here, but my shit has always been “Humrush(1).” Those slow piano keys a 2 year old could play with the doorknock drums and dudes making funny farm kazoo noises and shit? Straight up vicodin music. “Nitty Gritty(2)” is also a favorite. I used to be really into Sadat, and the way he sounds with Zev Love on here is pretty damn magical. All those Xs maybe. Of course, “Peachfuzz(3)” really encapsulates everything great about this group into 3 minutes of De La’s whimsy, Black Moon’s ruggedness, Tribe’s jazz, and the Jungle Brothers’ lyrical flourish. Shit is just an out and out classic, no two ways about it. Plus this includes the “Gasface Refill(4)” which was not on the original CD. OG single vinyl is upwards of 60 bucks and quiet as fuck. If you have King Geedorah or some Madvillainy, and not this, you need to act like you always knew and at least fool people. Go on lyrics.com and memorize it before you buy the album. Maybe you’ll score some legit points.| |reviewed by Bob Bannister From Amazon:|KMD (Kausing Much Damage, or a positive Kause in a Much Damaged society) was a Hip Hop group in the early 90s perhaps best known for launching the career of acclaimed MC/Producer MF Doom (known during his KMD tenure as Zev Love X). After guesting on 3rd Bass The Gas Face, the trio (Zev, brother Subroc, and Onyx) released the acclaimed and overlooked Mr. Hood full-length. Their political outlook was similar to the group Brand Nubian, who guested on Hood; however, the style was more comical and included a great deal of clips from old childrens recordings, mostly notably a sample of the Seaseme Street character Bert on the single Who Me? This is the official Elektra Records/Traffic Entertainment Group re-release with original artwork and track listing in its entirety. Cutting edge, ahead of its time production and skits from KMD and Stimulated Dummies (John Gamble and Mr. Dante Ross). Features the singles Peachfuzz, Who Me? and Nitty Gritty (feat. Brand Nubian). This is one Rap album that is not to be missed.| |
