Based in Oslo, Norway, Sigh & Explode is one of the most exciting acts to come out of Scandinavia in a long, long time. Even though they formed late in 2006, they have already recieved more attention than a dozen of your run-of-the-mills rock ’n roll bands combined, having won over fans, press and (soon to be jobless) recordindustrypeople along the way.
Combining hardcore frenzy, subtle songstructures, melodic hints and technical wizardry with geniune emotion, they are destined to leave a longlasting impression on those willing to indulge.
Influences range from Norwegian bands like Rumble In Rhodos and JR Ewing to american bands like Hot Snakes, At the Drive-In and The Bronx, without leaning too heavily on these bands musically, always introducing new ideas to their burgeoning sound.
Their debut EP ¡O Bailan Todos O No Baila Nadie! was initially recorded as a demo, but eventually the local underground label Mas-kina Recordings decided it would be unfair to leave it at that. It was released digitally in October 2007, and received airplay on both national and local radio, as well as becoming a sought-after item for bloodthirsty hardcore and punk fans across Scandinavia.
Sigh & Explode’s thunderous liveshows have been an eyeopener for young indiegirls and seasoned male rockers alike. Playing sold out shows with bands like The Blood Brothers and The Sons Of Saturn, as well as working the underground circuit in their hometown Oslo, Sigh & Explode have grown to be a liveband with a kamikaze-ish attitude usually lacking in bands this young.
Their uncompromising attitude was awarded in late 2007 when they won the prestigious Zoom-competition, arranged by among others the national radiochannel NRK P3. The band was rewarded with a full-scale tour of Norway, which brought them to best clubs Norway has to offer for a whole month in early 2008. Several shows at by:Larm the same year resulted in an invitation to UKs The Great Escape, playing shows with The Ghost of a Thousand, Cancer Bats, Johnny Truant and Hexes. Sigh & Explode were also booked to the big Norwegian festivals in 2008: Øya, Hove and Storåsfestivalen.
In March 2009 they released their debut album These Seem Like Tarantulas, still signed to Mas-kina Recordings. The album was recorded by Bjarne Stensli from Harrys gym and mixed by Emil Nikolaisen from Serena Maneesh, and received critical acclaim in the Norwegian press. The video for The Van Gogh Sky Shrinks the City… aired on MTV.
Only time will tell what Sigh & Explode have ahead of them, but we all know this band won’t stop until their hearts do. Be prepared.
