The music and lyrics are written by self-taught multi-instrumentalist Griff and the percussion provided by Gordon. A shared love of indie/folk music and a history of failed small-time band membership brought them together for one last hurrah. The musical influences cited on the myspace page are: |‘Pillows & Prayers’, Johnny Marr, Ivor Cutler, Jake Thackray, Neil Hannon, Lou Reed, Ennio Morricone, Leonard Cohen, Robert Wyatt, Brian Wilson, Sufjan Stevens, Hank Williams Sr., Matt McGinn. The myspace page also describes them as sounding like; ‘naive, lo-fi, acoustic songs of love, loss and regret’. The songs certainly contain a strong strain of melancholia and, while the band prefer to use the genre term ‘lo-fi’ to describe them, they are often described by listeners as best fitting into the indie-folk category but with a distinctly Scottish flavour. Griff has stated that his aim musically was “to find a sound that was part indie-pop and part folk but uniquely Sighrens. A sound that could only be made by two indie outsiders from a small town in Scotland.” Ultimately, Sighrens sound is best described as naive and under-produced but heartfelt. The songs are performed using traditional acoustic intruments such as guitar, mandolin, egg-shaker and glockenspiel. They are written and recorded quite quickly at home in the traditional lo-fi way to capture the raw feel. The songs from their first year in myspace are available on the CD ‘aon’. The songs from their second year in myspace are available on the CD ‘dha’. |
