Sugar Soul is a female Japanese hip-hop group. They were commercially successful. They started in 1997 as a collaboration, with Hasebe (programming), Aiko Machida (vocals) and Kawabe (composer). They helped bring hip hop to the mainstream music scene in Japan, along with artists like Misia and Utada Hikaru. They were categorized as “new R & B.” The music of “new R & B” is bass heavy with a token DJ scratch solo and a general emphasis on rhythms.
