The D.O.C. (Tracy Lynn Curry b. June 10, 1968) is an American rapper born in Houston, Texas who moved to Compton, California, to join the creative force behind the rap group N.W.A. Prior to his move, he was a member of the Fila Fresh Crew.
The D.O.C released his first solo album (produced by Dr. Dre) in 1989 called ‘No-One Can Do It Better’. This album is widely heralded as a classic. Sadly The D.O.C was involved in a car crash in the early 90’s that left him with a crushed larynx. This put his career on hold for many years and he was unable to capitalise on the success of his first album. However, he has continued to be a major influence on rap music by ghostwriting on classic albums such as Dr. Dre’s “The Chronic,” as well as songs by Snoop Dogg, amongst others.
After he lost his voice, he was in a skit as a game show contestant on Dr. Dre’s The Chronic album in 1992. His voice is very deep, rough, and has a sandpaper-sound in that track.
He has since released comeback albums “Helter Skelter” and “Deuce” that, although well-received, did not sell the units his undoubted talent deserves. He continues to be a behind-the-scenes force in West Coast hip-hop.
