Travelling the world for almost three years gave frontman Trent Grenell a glimpse into the beauty and variety of Europe and the world. His eyes and ears open to new possibilities, he came home to start a band…
The Seabellies are the product of the transformation that happens when you leave one skin behind and discover a whole new person lurking within. The band pushes boundaries and explores musical shadow-lands, constantly seeking the new and exciting. Their music is rich and lush, full of ethereal electronic sounds, strings, metalaphones and melodicas, soaring guitars and Scandinavian-influenced melodies.
Ambitious, exciting, and always looking for new answers to the eternal questions of life, love and all thats in-between, the Seabellies are unique. Swapping instruments throughout the set, the bands onstage presence is akin to bands like Architecture in Helsinki, Broken Social Scene and the Go! Team those who refuse to be boxed into the traditions of four beat rocknroll.
Formed in mid-late 2005, the Seabellies from Sydney, New South Wales have built upon the already-considerable reputation of their frontman, Newcastle singer/songwriter Trent Grenell. Joining him on stage is younger brother Kyle, along with Antony Martin on piano and keyboard, and guitarist and bassist Eddie Garven. The most recent additions to the line-up are Sean Kelleher on drums and Stephanie Setz, rounding out the band and taking on the toys the player of viola, metalaphone, melodica and keys And anything else the band can find to add into the mix of sounds!
The Seabellies may not have been around for long, but in a short time they have already established themselves within the Newcastle and Sydney music scenes, playing at venues such as The Hopetoun Hotel, The Annandale Hotel, Rebel Rebel, Excelsior, UTS and Bar On The Hill. The ‘Bellies have also supported artists such as Augie March, Something For Kate, Evermore, Dan Kelly And The Alpha Males, Shane Nicholson, The Fyreflyes, Expatriate, Peregrine and Andy Clockwise.
Fresh from winning The Newcastle University Band Competition, the ‘bellies are set to do some recording in September 2006. This may well be the year of the ‘bellies, so please, immerse yourselves in our submerged little world, and you shall never swim alone.
