The Silicon Scientist (a.k.a. Stefan Bornhorst from Bremen/northern Germany) started to play the piano at the age of 8 (in 1980), and got in touch with “analogue” synthesis when messing around with the Commodore 64’s SID chip in the 1980s. His first real analogue synth was the Korg MS10 in 1991, followed by more analogue synthesisers, string machines and a Mellotron when they were still affordable. Resulting from a continuous search for the ultimate sea of analogue sound, a large amount of solo recordings under the project name Dreams Encoded heaped up but apart from some giveaway CDs to friends and being played at some local clubs, these recordings remained unnoticed and unreleased. The real turnaround came in 1999 when The Convent needed a keyboard player. Two CDs and tours followed before The Convent decided to take a break in 2003. The times have changed but band activity continues, and another alter ego of The Silicon Scientist is now a happy member of the aspiring synth pop outfit Sonnenbrandt.
In 2005 and 2006, The Silicon Scientist has recorded a proper solo album called “Windows On The World” which has been released on vinyl by Anna Logue Records, accompanied by a blue 7” vinyl single called “Colourblind EP” and a CDR called “Bookmarks” which contains outtakes, demos and other stuff from the time in which the album was recorded.
