The Sugarhill Gang is a hip-hop group from the very late 70s and early 80s. They are credited with releasing hip-hop’s first single to find a mainstream audience beyond the hip-hop scene with their catchy (and 14-minute long) song “Rapper’s Delight.” By the mid-80s, the group faded away as the hip-hop scene began to expand and transform itself. Here’s a bit of trivia for you: ‘Apache’ appears in an episode of the critically acclaimed television show ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ in which Will Smith and his cousin perform for a competition to win money, in which they do a dance choreographed to this song. The dance has become popular and well-known and is now played commonly at high school dances, and even in some clubs, in which people reenact the famous dance. |
