The Trews are a Canadian rock group from Antigonish, Nova Scotia, consisting of vocalist Colin MacDonald, guitarist John-Angus MacDonald, bassist Jack Syperek, and drummer Sean Dalton.
The band are currently based in Toronto, Ontario.
The band started off with the name One I’d Trouser, before changing their name to Trouser and eventually The Trews. They released an EP as Trouser, and a second EP under the name “The Trews.”
In the early summer of 2002 the band was selected to take part in the 97.7 HTZ FM Rock Search, a high profile contest that is held annually by the Southern Ontario rock radio station. Winning the contest would prove to their big break as they soon landed a recording contract with Sony-BMG Canada.
The release of their first full-length CD House of Ill Fame in 2003, soon followed. House of Ill Fame contained the hit singles Every Inambition, Not Ready To Go, Tired Of Waiting, Fleeting Trust and Confessions. “Not Ready To Go” hit number one on Canadian rock radio and was the most played song of 2004 in that format.
House Of Ill Fame, has also been certified gold in Canada. In the past three years, the band have racked up six top 10 rock radio singles, including two chart-toppers.
The band has recently completed work on a follow-up to House of Ill Fame with producer Jack Douglas. The new album, Den of Thieves, was released on August 16th, 2005. The first single, So She’s Leaving, was released to radio June 28th, 2005 and was followed by the singles “Yearning” and “Poor Ol’ Broken Hearted Me.”
On April 18th, 2006 The Trews released their second album, Den of Thieves to American stores via Red Ink/Sony BMG.
The song Hollis And Morris on their first album, refers to an intersection in the nearby city of Halifax, and not an intersection in Antigonish as previously speculated.
Since the release of their debut album, House Of Ill Fame, The Trews have played well over 400 shows and have shared the stage with Big Sugar, Default, Evanescence, Finger Eleven, Nickelback, Sam Roberts, The Offspring, Three Days Grace, Will Hoge and most recently, Robert Plant and The Rolling Stones.
John-Angus MacDonald shares a lakeside residence in Toronto, Ontario with prominent aerospace engineer and rocket scientist Stefan “Swiss” Schmitz. Mr. Schmitz acts as a consultant in regards to the issue of air travel and the dangers that it entails.
On February 19th, 2008 The Trews released their third album, No Time For Later via Bumstead Recording, & Universal Music Canada. The first single from this release was, Hold Me In Your Arms.
On October 6th, 2009, The Trews released their first ever acoustic album and DVD entitled Acoustic - Friends & Total Strangers, which was recorded in late January 2009 over 2 nights at the Glenn Gould Theatre, in Toronto, ON, Canada. The first single from this release is Sing Your Heart Out.
