Theresa Sokyrka has always been involved with music, from her childhood surrounded by a musically inclined family to her studies in music at Red Deer College. These formative years honed her talent in playing the violin, the guitar and the piano, as well as her singing voice. Her big break came when when she won the Saskatoon Idolcontest. This led to her being selected as a finalist for Canadian Idol’s second season, in which she placed second to Kalan Porter. The media frenzy that ensued allowed her to get the leg-up she needed to get her start in the industry, but unlike most Idols, decided to pursue this opportunity as an independent artist. In 2005, Sokyrka released These Old Charms, a collection including some of her favourite jazz standards, popular numbers she sang on Idol and three originals. It attained certified gold status last June, and was recently nominated for a Juno in the “Best Pop Album” category. Her new CD, Something Is Expected, will hit stores on August 29th, 2006, and will contain tracks all written or co-written by Sokyrka herself. |
