Andy Hunter° is a British DJ and composer, encompassing a wide range of styles within the genre of electronica, including progressive breaks, trance, downtempo and ambient.
Born in the Midlands of England in 1974, Hunter° discovered an interest for sound engineering during his teens. Following his aspiration, he left school and began to work for bands such as Suede and The Wonder Stuff. In 1992, he joined New Generation Music and Mission as a travelling engineer and moved to Bristol – the scene that was breaking drum and bass. After honing his skills as a DJ at various nightclubs, Hunter° joined forces with Robbie Bronnimann and Ray Goudie of Hydro around the time of their second album, Aborigination, further developing his production skills. Following this, he would also form a band named Trip with Martin King, and made a release in 1999 with the album Cultural Shif. The same year, Hunter° split with Hydro and moved to Swansea, Wales to focus on solo projects.
While continuing his work as a DJ around Swansea, Andy Hunter° set out to form his first solo album in 2000. Spanning a year and a half, his work culminated into Exodus and was released by the fall of 2002, through Nettwerk. The album gained praise from the US-based magazine Rolling Stone, and several tracks made their spots of fame in the world of digital media: While “Go” and “Wonders Of You” garnered major placements in film and television, including uses in The Matrix: Reloaded (trailer), Sky High (trailer), National Treasure (trailer), Tomb Raider 2 (trailer), Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, The Italian Job, and ABC’s hit series Alias, his work has also been featured in a handful of video games, including SSX 3, Enter The Matrix, Black Hawk Down, Lumines Mobile, Need for Speed: Underground, Burnout Revenge and Forza Motorsport 2. “Go” has also been featured by Microsoft in their promotional video for Silverlight.
The album also spawned two singles, starting with “Amazing” in 2002, and “Go” the following year. 2002 also saw Hunter° touring the United States, Japan and Europe with top names in the dance music business, including Tiësto. Among his live performances, Hunter° has also performed at the Digital Entertainment Anywhere launch party in Los Angeles, 2004, hosted by Bill Gates, where he presented “Go” in surround sound.
Following the great success of the first album, Andy Hunter° set to release his second studio project by the spring of 2005, with the six track EP, Life. Released through Sparrow Records, Life continues in the style of what became his reputation from the previous album, and is mainly biased towards progressive breaks. As expected, new publishing deals were made with the media, this time with the track “Come On” being featured in the film trailer for Speed Racer. The song was also included in the Christian video game Dance Praise, which also features the track “Open My Eyes”, and the Exodus hit “Go”.
In a cry for more variety and artistic freedom, Andy Hunter° expanded from the roots of his first album, and the early spring of 2008 saw the release of Colour. The same year, Hunter° also wrote and produced the score for the independent film Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed with his co-producer from Colour, Robbie Bronnimann.
