His approach to becoming the next Canadian Idol is simple: “I am going to give people the best that I can give each night. I won’t hold anything back and I think that is what’s going to move people.” Drew, who has an honours diploma in Music Production and Engineering, is a huge fan of the musician Jeff Buckley and admires the longevity of bands and artists like The Beatles, “They stayed creative, innovative and always pushed their limits as artists.” Drew loves to take advantage of the outdoors, snowboarding and wakeboarding as much as he can. He also enjoys reading and watching movies - Labyrinth is one of his all-time favourite films. He collects vintage vinyl records from artists such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. “I love the sound of records and looking at their artwork. You just can’t get that from any other musical format.” “The whole process has been a surprise so far,” says Drew of his experience on making it into the Canadian Idol Top 24. “I did not realize the extent of how far you need to push yourself emotionally and musically to stay a contender.” Drew is aware of the pitfalls that can sometimes occur when trying to build a career in the entertainment industry, and he relates to established artists who he feels share his same values. “I admire Johnny Depp, because he tries to keep his personal life personal, and seems to keep his ego in check.” For a down-home guy who wants to remain focused and grounded, it makes perfect sense that the song Drew insists he relates to best is an old Joe Walsh tune, entitled “Ordinary Average Guy.” |
