Biography by Hannes Bezuidenhout GOBBLE GOBBLE is the hyperactive, futuristic techno-pop project of San Francisco via Canada pop experimentalist Cecil Frena. Caught in a strange dialogue between harsh noise, future-leaning electronic music, indie rock signifiers and mainstream pop,GOBBLE GOBBLE’s sounds are unorthodox to say the least. Stuttering, blown-out and chopped guitar peals, erratic, bubbling synth arpeggios, crunked-out, sparkling 808 hats and bursts of meticulously processed digital noise abound: all these boisterous bits held in place by the steady pulse of grooves that would, without their eruptive context, sound at home on a European minimal techno 12″. Part of Canada’s shadowy futurepop collective Hovercraft, the band gestated in a small scene of passionate musicians with forward-thinking attitudes about pop music. Indeed,GOBBLE GOBBLE’s other members also have their own projects (Purity Ring, Kuhrye-oo) which of late have garnered well-deserved buzz. In the live context, GOBBLE GOBBLE’s indelible hooks are transformed into something like an ecstatic, surreal dream sequence: tutu-garbed gobblins bash away on pots and pans, smash shovels together, percuss on hockey helmets and generally get a party started unlike any other. The band left a trail of pixie dust and charred bodies on its 2010 Mobile Rave Infinitour, a marathon tour lasting nearly six months, in which they unleashed a portable PA system to start parties in unconventional spaces, kitchens and basements all across North America. Now, armed with its completed debut record (release date TBA), GOBBLE GOBBLE is heading back out on the road to ecstatically do battle in 2011 (dates below). |
