There are two artists known as Hole, the American alternative rock band and a British one-man experimental/industrial project active in the late 1980s,
1) Hole is an American alternative rock band that formed in Los Angeles, and was active from 1989-2002 before reforming in 2009. The band is fronted by vocalist/rhythm guitarist Courtney Love, who co-founded Hole with lead guitarist Eric Erlandson when he responded to an ad she placed in the punk zine Flipside. Lisa Roberts, Love’s neighbor, filled in as the band’s first bassist but dropped the project very early on.
Hole’s abrasive, self-consciously obnoxious style of alternative rock was initially influenced heavily by punk rock and noise rock, though as they progressed they began to incorporate elements of pop rock into their sound. The band name came from a conversation Courtney Love had with her mother.
Hole had a brief period as a three-guitar lineup, first with Mike Geisbriecht, then briefly with the musician Errol Stewert, but the lineup that recorded the first album included only Love, Erlandson, bassist Jill Emery and drummer Caroline Rue. Rue was fired in 1992 and Emery left soon after, to be replaced by Leslie Hardy and Patty Schemel, respectively. Hardy left without contributing to the band, despite claims she recorded “Beautiful Son”. She was subsequently replaced by Kristen Pfaff in 1993. After Pfaff died of a heroin overdose in 1994, Melissa Auf der Maur took her place from 1995 until the band’s dissolution in 2002. When Schemel left the band in 1998, Samantha Maloney took her place as drummer.
On June 17th, 2009, NME posted a blog, and links to two videos, announcing the reunion of Hole. The article was primarily focused on Courtney Love’s upcoming release, “Nobody’s Daughter”, yet it claimed with the “rock Courtney back in action, this music could only come out under one name, HOLE.” The new Hole lineup includes lead guitarist Micko Larkin, Shawn Dailey on Bass and Stu Fisher on Drums. The long-delayed album “Nobodys Daughter” is expected sometime in the first quarter of 2010.
2) John Everall. John Everall or John Severall is most known for his work as Tactile, Spacemarker, Multicide, and Mesh and was the label boss of Sentrax Recordings. Through the years he worked with various artists: Nigel Ayers, Mick Harris, Jhonn Balance, Karl Blake, James Plotkin, Little Annie, Joe Banks, Shane Embury. It’s difficult to discribe the sound of Hole; it has some goth, industrial and electronic influences, with some tracks having an In The Nursery sort of sound.
