The other Marineville releases here (Redpath House, Billie Holiday) are by a UK drum n’ bass band. MarineVille (NZ) are a Wellington rock group currently working on their 3rd album. Inspired by classic 1960’s song-writing (The Beach Boys, The Velvet Underground) through to the sprawling epics of Australia’s The Dirty Three the band balances out it’s songs with passages of improvisation, sometimes turning a 3 minute pop song into a 10 minute jam. Their previous releases have included Ready for the Dance (Oak Park Records, 2001) and Diving the Wreck (Involve Records, 2004). In UK, The Wire magazine praised Ready for the Dance’s “prominent, ragged guitars … amassing then releasing vivid, intense bursts of energy”. In 2004 MarineVille received a grant from Creative New Zealand to make their second album Diving the Wreck (Involve Records). Writing in Staple magazine Steve Kerr said ‘… if you’re interested in hearing well-crafted, adventurous guitar music consciously building on our underground guitar heritage, then there isn’t a band that’s doing a better job of it right now than MarineVille’. Based on the songs of singer/songwriter/guitarist Mark Williams the band currently includes Drummer Greg Cairns (ex-Verlaines, King Loser), bassist Rebecca Rice (ex-National Youth Choir) and keyboard player Jeremy Coubrough (Signer, The Bright Colours). Their band are currently working on their forthcoming third album. |
