A Superwoman can be defined as an extremely accomplished woman, especially one able to do many things well and often; a force to be reckoned with. Through a seamless blend of R&B, Pop, Hip Hop and Dance, Nicoya has done just that. As exemplified in her smash single “Superman,” this Superwoman fuses various genres to create her own unique and fluid style. A triple threat, and a superwoman in her own right, Nicoya’s eclectic and powerful music has positioned her in the recording industry as a force to be reckoned with.
Nicoya’s talent was evident at the tender age of 5. Showcasing her natural vocal ability to family and friends, Nicoya would perform songs from The Little Mermaid, making sure everyone around her felt her presence. When she was 12, Nicoya, along with two classmates formed the group Southern Girl in preparation for a middle school talent show. After taking the talent show by storm, the trio committed themselves to become professional recording artists. Performing at nearly every talent show in the Houston area, the group quickly became an integral part of Houston’s entertainment scene. Their talent and newly acquired fame allowed them to perform on BET’s 106 & Park Live show and to be the opening act for Mystical’s tour stop in Houston. As word continued to spread, Southern Girl became a highly sought after act for numerous festivals and celebrations throughout Texas. Eventually, they began fielding performance requests from local radio stations KBXX 97.9 and KMJQ 102.1 as well as appearances on The Black Family Reunion Tour hosted by Ebony Magazine and The Texas Summer Music Conference in Dallas, Texas.
In 2006, Southern Girl’s hard work began to pay of when they were signed to Atlanta based Block Ent and Warner Bros Records. Being a member of this group, Nicoya had the opportunity to work with such notable writers and producers as Bryan Michael Cox, Adonis, Jontae Austin, Cool & Dre and Daron Jones and Q Parker of 112. Working with these top notch talents not only influenced Nicoya’s songwriting approach but also helped her cultivate a creative vision that would become the foundation for her future work. Furthermore, the group was given the opportunity to be a part of Radio One’s Russ Parr Back to School Bus Tour, competing on NBC’s America’s Got Talent and various promotional touring opportunities throughout the country, helping Nicoya to evolve as an artist.
Nicoya was inspired to hone her craft further by continuing her study of music at Houston’s Texas Southern University on an academic scholarship. An all American girl, it was here where Nicoya was a member of the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and studied and trained in both classical and jazz music. After being exposed to many unfamiliar styles and genres of music Nicoya realized that it is possible to create new music by fusing very different influences.
Nicoya’s studies had such an impact on her view of music that she craved to be challenged creatively. Her desire to experiment with different genres and take creative control of her project led her to leave the group in December of 2007. Now equipped with a spirit and training that only comes from hard work and the hard knocks of the music business, Nicoya is taking the steps necessary to allow her talent to flourish. A Superwoman who cannot be relegated to any single genre, Nicoya is a universal talent uniting people through her blend of melodies. It is this uniqueness that separates Nicoya from the rest.
