The band formed in Annandale, Sydney, in 2004. The band started out as a project between lead vocalist Alex Burnett and drummer David Hall. The collaboration between the two wasn’t considered serious until Jamie Davis, of British label Ark Recordings, heard their work when here for a friend’s wedding. Burnett described the signing as a “fantasy story”, saying “He basically signed us because of the songs and the vibe - he hadn’t even seen us live”. More luck ensued as Davis played some of their demos for friend Ben Hillier, co-producer of British indie rock band Elbow’s second album, Cast of Thousands, as well as working with the likes of Blur, Doves, The Horrors and Depeche Mode. Hillier willingly put his hand up to produce the album. They first came into prominence in Australia with their debut EP titled Things Behind the Sun. The EP was released in Australia on February 20, 2007. Since then they’ve played alongside the likes of Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Lee, The Bravery and Tegan & Sara, as well as a UK tour with The Thrills, Jimmy Eat World and Vampire Weekend. Sparkadia’s debut studio album Postcards, was released on May 31, 2008. The band’s first album peaked at #23 on the ARIA albums chart. With the song “Too Much to Do” being released as a single, receiving airplay on Australian radio station Triple J. The song is one of three that has received high rotation on the station. www.sparkadia.com |
