Formed in 1999 when Jess “stole” Claire from former band Little Green Pants The first 3 songs ever written by SugarComa are ‘Bed of Dolls’, ‘Boy in Chains’ (now known as Zero Star) and ‘Heartworm’. These went on to be Coma classics. After a couple of other songs were written, the band recorded an amateur-sounding demo tape in the St Edwards school studio. The bands first proper gig took place at The Walthamstow Standard, supporting a Metallica tribute act. They went on to play this venue a total of 4 times, with the last ever time being the show that secured them their 1st single release, with Sid Abuse. Other venues graced by SugarComa up until this point included The Ruskin Arms (where Iron Maiden played their 1st gig) and The Monarch in Camden. The band then recorded with Iestyn Polson of David Gray fame; the “Blisters” EP contained the tracks Blisters, Heartworm, Milk Fed and Bed of Dolls, and received critical acclaim upon its release in August 2000. Some of the gigs were attended by record labels such as Music For Nations, who showed interest in the fledgling band. A new song, ‘Enmity’, appears on the Ltd Edition ‘Essex EP 7”. SugarComa’s first really big break took place in Dec 2000, when they landed a slot supporting My Ruin on their UK tour. 2001 began with the band’s biggest gig to date, supporting Disturbed at The London Astoria. They then went on to play a few dates with Guano Apes, before retreating to the Windings studio in Wales to write songs for their debut album. Around Easter time the band recorded tracks for a new EP to be released on the Music For Nations label, to whom they signed. with their producer, Colin Richardson, who has previously worked with the likes of Machine Head, Carcass and Pulkas. Recording took place at the Chapel studio in Lincolnshire. They spent most of Summer 2001 writing and rehearsing brand new songs. The band took a holiday in Majorca for a week in the middle of this, and some of the experiences they had were an inspiration for the new tracks. (i.e. ‘Shots’ ‘Last Orders’ and ‘Lost Morning’). The Band then went on to release the “what goes round” EP which was available on kerrang. Following the success of that EP they went on headline tours with InMe and then Number One Son. They also have toured with Fear Factory, Machine Head, Will Haven, The Wildhearts, Soil and One Minute Silence to name a few. Sugarcoma then released their debut album “becoming something else” which had 13 tracks. Sugarcoma then went on to part from their label “MFN” and went back into the studio in may 2003 to record a demo which features “words and numbers, ignorance is this, and a million peices” which sparked alot of positive feedback from fans.
