Alexz Johnson (born Alexzandra Spencer Johnson on November 4th, 1986) is a Canadian musician and singer-songwriter from New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada. Though first starting her career recording several demos and appearing on multiple compilations, her debut album, Voodoo was released in 2010.
Born as the sixth child in a musical family of 10, Alexz Johnson came to the planet singing. Alexz started taking vocal lessons at the age of nine. Growing up, she was strongly influenced by her father’s classic Roy Orbison, The Rat Pack and Billy Joel records; and a lot of 1950’s bands like The Temptations. By the age of 14, Alexz took a strong liking to Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush’s world sounds and fell in love with Rickie Lee Jones lyrics. During this time, Alexz was performing the national anthem at NHL and NBA games in Vancouver and gaining great recognition for her vocal talent.
At 15, Alexz began writing in her basement with her brother Brendan, who had been going to production school to follow his passion in music production. The mix of Brendan’s Police, Beach Boys and Beatles influence mixed with Alexz’s world rhythm way of writing, created a truly unique sound.
At the age of 18, Alexz landed the role of music competition winner Jude Harrison in Instant Star, a Gemini Award winning drama series. Production began at Epitome Pictures in early 2004 and the series premiered in September of 2004 on CTV and on The N network (Nickelodeon) in the US. The series was also licensed in 120 other countries. Instant Star was a perfect way to combine Alexz’s musical talents with her passion for acting and it also gave Alexz and her brother to opportunity to write songs that were featured on the soundtrack for all four seasons of the series. On October 21, 2008, Alexz won the Gemini Award for “Best Performance in a Children’s or Youth Program or Series” for the Instant Star episode entitled Let It Be. Other television credits for Alexz include The Chris Isaak Show, The Collector, Cold Squad and Smallville. Film credits for Alexz include Final Destination 3, Devil’s Diary and Stranger With My Face.
In 2006 Alexz signed a deal with Capitol-EMI Records, but just before going into the studio to record, the label executives who had signed Alexz were released from their contracts. Epic Records had their eyes on Alexz and in 2008 signed her to a multi-album deal. All the songs on her first album with Epic were cowritten by Alexz and her brother. Unfortunately Epic Records then underwent major internal changes and the album was shelved. Alexz was then free to record and release new songs on her own terms and in 2009 she signed with Orange Lounge Recordings new imprint, inDiscover Recordings.
Determined to share her music with her fans, Alexz released her debut album, entitled Voodoo, with Orange Lounge Recordings new imprint, inDiscover Recordings on March 30, 2010. The first single for the album was Trip Around the World and the video for this was filmed in New Orleans in January 2010. For Alexz, it’s the truth, the pain, the love and the music she’s wanted to share all along and now has the chance to. Alexz says, “It really feels like there’s a sense of spirituality that came through when we were working on this record.”|
